Installing needle/wrist pin bearings in the Phantom 85

Posted by Alexander Nave on

The 1st gen Phantom 85 by design is a powerhouse but came with some issues. Check out the unboxing and first look review https://youtu.be/wr06JLuUJAQ

One of these is the stock wrist pin bushing was not up to par and caused all sorts of issues that eventually leads to the piston cracking or crank bearings to fail.

Today we are replacing this bushing with a nice set of 10mm bearings and pin!

Here is what you need

- stock china doll 10mm wrist pin and needle bearings

- 10mm ID x 12mm OD x 8mm L bushing https://amzn.to/3nS4hrW

First we need to get that bushing out. If you dont have a way to press it out I used a small flat head and hammer to tap one side out at the split. It may take some work but once you get it out you can see it is bit flimsy.

Get yourself a nice 10mm needle bearing set and wrist pin from any stock china doll. For this one I used an ole FM80 wrist pin and bearings.

The Phantom85 wrist pin is a little bit shorter so you will need to grind it down so you can get the wrist pin clips in. Make sure to grind around the outer edge so it goes back in.

 Phantom85 12mm wrist pin vs 10mm

Being this is a 10mm pin and bearing and the piston is 12mm we will need some 10mm ID x 12mm OD x 8mm L bushings. These I got from amazon 6$ for 10.

These will be pressed into the piston on either side past the clip slot.

For this I put them in on either side and used a vice to push them in.

Then use the stock 12mm wrist pin  to ever so slightly push them in past the wrist pin slot.

Make sure you can get the pin and bearings in and then put her back together. I do have to say getting the rings back in this engine is a tad bit more difficult than a regular one don't break em.

and BOOM done!

Hey, thanks for reading and I will catch you on the next one. ✌

  • So that’s all fine and dandy the new needle bearing is now a regular 10mm right all good? No what about the 12mm rod? Need to put a bushing there as well right? Or am I wrong?

  • Thanks for the Video. I am waiting on parts for my phantom now. Ordered a YD 100 crank and bearings so I can put in new. The old bushing destroyed my crank bearings after it went. Been looking for new bushings for the 12mm wrist pin but this is saving me lots of headaches. Thanks for your video, sure do appreciate it
